About an hour. We examine the tendon, look at it on ultrasound where that helps, and check the contraindication list.

The first session
Gel is applied and the handpiece is worked over the target at a level you can tolerate. Expect 20 to 45 minutes in the room.

The next day or two
Mild tenderness over the treated area is common and settles. You carry on with your normal day, with any activity limits written down.

How it works
The target is located first
The painful structure is identified on examination and, where useful, on ultrasound. The handpiece is then positioned over that structure rather than over the general area.
Gel is applied and the handpiece works the area
Coupling gel is applied, and the handpiece delivers pulses while it is moved slowly across the target. Intensity is adjusted to what you can tolerate.
The series is spaced across weeks
Sessions are spaced to allow the tissue to respond between visits. The number is set in your plan at the evaluation.

Cortisone can settle a bad flare quickly and has a real role in the short term. It is not offered here, and where it is the sensible next step we will say so.

What a session is actually like
You sit or lie with the area exposed. Gel goes on, and the handpiece is worked slowly over the tender structure while the unit delivers pulses.
It is uncomfortable directly over the sore spot and unremarkable everywhere else. The level is turned up gradually and you can ask for less at any point.
What it will not do
Shockwave does not repair a torn tendon and it is not a substitute for loading exercise. Tendons recover through graded load, and the device work is there to make that load tolerable.
If your scan shows a complete tear, the correct next step is an orthopedic opinion, and we will make that referral rather than start a series.
